New Cultural Education Program Launches for Youth

New "Roots & Wings" program teaches GaDangme heritage to youth through Saturday classes covering history, language, and traditions.

The GaDangme Kpee Association has launched an innovative cultural education program designed to teach young GaDangme-Americans about their heritage, language, and traditions. The program, called "Roots & Wings," meets every Saturday at the community center and covers topics including GaDangme history, traditional music and dance, and basic language lessons in Ga and Dangme. Led by elder community members and cultural educators, the program serves children ages 8-18 and has already enrolled 45 participants in its first month. The curriculum includes storytelling sessions with community elders, hands-on traditional craft workshops, and preparation for cultural performances. Classes begin with Ga and Dangme language instruction, teaching basic greetings, numbers, and common phrases. Children learn about the seven GaDangme traditional areas: Ga, Adangbe, Shai, Krobo, Osudoku, Ningo, and Prampram, understanding their unique customs and dialects. Traditional music lessons feature the atumpan drums, gong-gong, and other indigenous instruments. Students learn the rhythms and meanings behind ceremonial songs used in festivals and religious ceremonies. Parents have expressed enthusiasm about their children's growing connection to their cultural identity. "My daughter now greets her grandmother in Ga and asks about our family's history," said parent Akosua Mensah. "This program is giving our children something precious we almost lost." The program also includes field trips to African cultural centers and guest speakers who share expertise in traditional crafts, oral history, and contemporary African-American experiences.
