Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about the GaDangme Kpee Association of Georgia.
Who are the GaDangme people?
The GaDangme are an ethnic group indigenous to the Greater Accra Region of Ghana, West Africa. They comprise two closely related groups — the Ga and the Dangme — who share cultural practices, historical roots, and a common geographic homeland along the coastal and inland regions of present-day Accra. Known for their rich traditions, distinctive festivals, and vibrant artistic heritage, the GaDangme people have one of the oldest continuous urban cultures in West Africa.
What is the GaDangme Kpee Association of Georgia?
The GaDangme Kpee Association of Georgia (also known as GaDangme Association Georgia) is a registered cultural and community organization based in Georgia, USA. It was established to bring together people of GaDangme descent and those who love GaDangme culture, with the mission of preserving cultural heritage, fostering unity, supporting community development in Ghana, and providing a mutual-aid network for GaDangme people in the Georgia diaspora.
What does 'Kpee' mean?
'Kpee' is a Ga word meaning 'association' or 'organization.' It reflects the communal spirit of the GaDangme people — the idea of coming together as one body for shared purpose. The name GaDangme Kpee therefore means 'GaDangme Association' or 'GaDangme Coming Together.'
What is Homowo festival?
Homowo is the most important festival of the Ga people, celebrated annually between July and September. The name means 'hooting at hunger' — a reference to a historical famine the Ga people overcame through collective effort. The festival is marked by the preparation and sharing of traditional palm nut soup with kpokpoi (a corn meal), family reunions, libations to ancestors, drumming, dancing, and community gatherings. It is one of the most joyous and culturally significant events in the GaDangme calendar.
What is Ngmayem festival?
Ngmayem is the harvest festival of the Dangme people, celebrated in October or November. The word 'Ngmayem' translates to 'the eating of the new millet.' The festival marks the end of the agricultural season and gives thanks for a bountiful harvest. It features traditional rituals, communal feasts, cultural performances, and visits to ancestral homes. Ngmayem is a time for family reunions and reinforcing community bonds among the Dangme people.
What are the Ga and Dangme languages?
Ga and Dangme are two distinct but related Kwa languages spoken by the GaDangme people. Ga is primarily spoken in and around Accra, while Dangme is spoken by subgroups including the Shai, Krobo, Ada, Ningo, and Prampram. Both languages are tonal with rich oral traditions in proverbs, songs, and storytelling. The GaDangme Association actively works to preserve and promote these languages among diaspora communities.
